"Required in stewards that one be found faithful."

Text: 1 Corinthians 4:2

FAITHFULNESS TO GOD

This is one of the most important features that must characterise a true servant of the Lord Jesus Christ! An unfaithful servant brings dishonour to the Lord’s name and shame to himself.

“Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful.”
1 Corinthians 4:2

1. “Moreover it is required”

a) A true and good servant has to possess many characteristic features:
i) Humble
ii) Obedient
b) On top of that (idea of “moreover”):
i) He has to be faithful.
ii) This is expected.
iii) This is required.

2. “Stewards”

a) The same word is used.
b) He may be likened to a “household manager”.

3. Faithfulness

a) This was taught in the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30).
b) The servants were given different portions of money (a “talent” is a huge amount of money).
c) The servants who did well were commended for their faithfulness (Matthew 25:21-23).
d) The servant who did nothing at all was judged and called “wicked and lazy” (Matthew 25:26).

4. Examples of faithfulness

a) Moses was cited as a faithful servant of the Lord (Hebrews 3:5).
i) He served God faithfully for forty years.
ii) This was noted and commended.
b) The Lord Jesus Christ
i) He was faithful to God who called Him (Hebrews 3:2).
ii) Christ proved Himself faithful as Son over His own house (Hebrews 3:6).
c) Every true servant of Christ the Lord must seek to be faithful to his calling.
