"I fed you with milk and not with solid food..."

Text: 1 Corinthians 3:2

THE SPIRITUAL DIET

Paul lamented that he could not do much more about the spiritual diet the Corinthians were on. Their lack of growth in spirituality meant that they could not progress beyond a certain level.

A QUICK REVIEW

The Apostle Paul offered a quick and candid review of the spiritual state of the Corinthians.

“I fed you with milk and not with solid food;
for until now you were not able to receive it,
and even now you are still not able;
for you are still carnal. For where there are envy,
strife, and divisions among you,
are you not carnal and behaving like mere men?”
1 Corinthians 3:2-3

1. “I fed you with milk and not with solid food”

a) Milk is the food of babies.
b) Solid food is the food of people who have gone beyond spiritual infancy.

2. A sad observation

a) “Until now you were not able to receive it”
i) Paul had spent a year and half in Corinth.
ii) However, they had not progressed as they should have.
iii) They were happy with milk but could not digest solid food.
b) “For until now you were not able”
i) A certain period of time had passed.
ii) The actual amount of time is not made known to us though.
iii) But it must have been significant enough for Paul to note the lack of spiritual growth.

3. “You are still carnal”

a) Paul noted the marks of carnality:
i) Envy
ii) Strife
iii) Divisions
b) “Behaving like mere men”
i) Men of the world.
ii) People still gripped by the flesh (carnality is essentially “of the flesh”).
