"The wisdom of God..."

Text: 1 Corinthians 2:7

THE WISDOM PAUL POSSESSED

The Apostle Paul was astute in theological matters. His wisdom and his insights are of invaluable worth! However, this humble servant of the Lord would always say that what he knew was “revealed by the Spirit”.

“But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery,
the hidden wisdom which God ordained
before the ages for our glory.”
1 Corinthians 2:7

1. “But we speak the wisdom of God”

a) This was Paul’s declaration.
i) That he had the wisdom of God given to him.
ii) That he spoke the wisdom of God in ministry.
b) Paul did not claim exclusive rights to the wisdom of God.
i) Thus, he used the plural pronoun “we”.
ii) This would include those in his team (Silas, Timothy, Titus etc).

2. “In a mystery”

a) The word “mystery” is not to be understood in the ordinary sense of the word (that is, “mysterious”).
b) It must be understood in the theological sense of the word.
i) It is essentially a revelation from God.
ii) This wisdom cannot be obtained because of mere human intelligence.

3. “The hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages”

a) The wisdom of God was “hidden” by God Himself.
b) It is the prerogative of God:
i) To withhold
ii) To reveal
c) Over the ages
i) When man refuses to seek God for wisdom. It is hidden.
ii) When man humbles himself, God may yet reveal His wisdom.

4. “For our glory”

a) It is God who may withhold glory to man.
b) It is also God who may bestow His glory to man (Wisdom from God is His way of honouring man).
