Text: 1 Corinthians 15:54

IMMORTALITY

The doctrine of the Second Coming of Christ is truly glorious. However, it will take faith to comprehend the many features associated with the Return of the Lord Jesus Christ.

“For this corruptible must put on incorruption,
and this mortal must put on immortality.
So when this corruptible has put on incorruption,
and this mortal has put on immortality,
then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written:
‘Death is swallowed up in victory.’
‘O Death, where is your sting?
O Hades, where is your victory?'”
1 Corinthians 15:53-55

1. Incorruption and Immortality

a) The present human life is characterised by
i) Corruption
ii) Mortality
b) When the Lord Jesus returns to establish the Kingdom of God
i) The corruptible will put on incorruption.
ii) The mortal will put on immortality.

2. “That which is written”

a) The prophetic word is taken from Isaiah 25:8.

“He will swallow up death forever.”

b) Paul’s rendition of this prophetic text.

1 Corinthians 15:54

3. Another Prophetic text cited

a) This is taken from Hosea 13:14.

“I will ransom them from the power of the grave;
I will redeem them from death.
O Death, I will be your plagues!
O Grave, I will be your destruction!”

b) Paul’s rendition

“O Death where is your sting?
O Hades, where is your victory?”
1 Corinthians 15:55

c) There was such a sense of triumph in the Apostle Paul.
d) This is a glorious hope that we have in our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

This faith must be kept strong and alive!
