"The image of the heavenly Man."

Text: 1 Corinthians 15:49

THE IMAGE OF THE HEAVENLY MAN

Adam failed to faithfully bear the image of God. No one has ever been able to bear that image of God except the Lord Jesus Christ. He has made it possible for the children of God to bear the Divine image.

“As was the man of dust,
so also are those who are made of dust;
and as is the heavenly Man,
so also are those who are heavenly.
And as we have borne the image of the man of dust,
we shall also bear the image of the heavenly Man.”
1 Corinthians 15:48-49

1. The original image

a) We were meant to bear the image of God.
b) This was the original plan.

“Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image,
according to Our likeness… ‘”
Genesis 1:26

“So God created man in His own image;
in the image of God He created him;
male and female He created them.”
Genesis 1:27

2. “As was the man of dust, so also are those are made of the dust”

a) Adam was made from the dust.
b) So are we made from the dust.

3. “And as is the heavenly Man, so also are those who are heavenly”

a) The heavenly Man is a reference to the Lord Jesus Christ.
b) Those who are true believers will also be like Him.
c) Those who are heavenly minded will bear His image too.

4. “And as we have borne the image of the man of dust”

a) Being mortal, we bear the image of Adam.
b) We continue to bear that image if we do not have the salvation that comes from the Lord.

5. “We shall also bear the image of the heavenly Man”

a) When we believe in the Lord Jesus we become children of God (John 1:12).
We have a changed status!
b) But we have more than a changed status.
i) We become a new man (Colossians 3:10).
ii) We are re-created (2 Corinthians 5:17).
iii) We have a new man created in true righteousness and holiness (Ephesians 4:23-24).
