"For you see your calling..."

Text: 1 Corinthians 1:26

APPRECIATING OUR CALLING

Our calling from God is something that we should never take for granted! Rather, it should be greatly appreciated.

“For you see your calling, brethren,
that not many wise according to the flesh,
not many mighty, not many noble, are called.”
1 Corinthians 1:26

1. “For you see your calling”

a) The calling
i) An invitation from God to be His people.
ii) To have faith in the Lord Jesus through the gospel message of the cross.
iii) To follow Him as true disciples.
b) To see
i) To understand
ii) To appreciate

2. A candid assessment of the people who are called to salvation

a) “Not many wise according to the flesh”
i) Though wisdom is prized.
ii) The fact was that not many may be described as belonging to the “intelligentsia”.
iii) According to the flesh- with reference to life’s actual circumstances.
b) “Not many mighty”
i) The mighty ones are those who may have great power and influence.
ii) Not many are to be found in these ranks.
c) “Not many noble”
i) These are the “high born” ones.
ii) Not many come from the “privileged class”.

3. “Are called”

a) This phrase was added to give meaning to the idea of calling.
b) This was a humbling reality.
c) The people who are called by the Lord are just “ordinary people”.
d) Even more, that we are called “saints” should bring a great sense of gratitude to the heart!
