Subject: Evangelism

Focus: “I am the light of the world”

INTRODUCTION

1. The challenges of Evangelism are many

2. What we seek to do when we practise evangelism

a) We deal with the problem of sin
b) We share about God who can effectively deal with sin
c) We speak of the Lord Jesus who came to be our Saviour

TEACHING IN THE TEMPLE OF JERUSALEM

1. If the Lord Jesus was in Galilee

a) He taught in synagogues
b) In open spaces
c) In homes

2. If the Lord Jesus was in Jerusalem

a) He would teach at the Temple
b) There were courtyards that He could use
c) People may gather around Him to hear Him teach (John 8:1)

A CHALLENGE TO THE LORD JESUS CHRIST

1. This challenge came from the scribes and Pharisees (John 8:3)

2. They brought a woman who was caught in adultery (John 8:3)

a) They set her before the Lord Jesus
b) They were setting the stage to try and entrap Him

3. Presentation of the Problem to the Lord Jesus

a) Smugly they spoke out
“Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery, in the very act” John 8:4
b) Citing the Law of Moses
“Now Moses, in the law, commanded us that such should be stoned. But what do You say?” John 8:5
c) This was done to test the Lord Jesus
i) They waited to hear what the Lord Jesus had to say
ii) Anything He said, they figured they could twist to their advantage
iii) They had tried, on many occasions, to ensnare the Lord Jesus, but had not succeeded
iv) Would they succeed now?

REFUSING TO ANSWER THE ACCUSERS IMMEDIATELY

1. An unusual action taken

a) The Lord Jesus wrote something on the floor with His finger (John 8:6)
b) It was as if He had not heard them

2. The scribes and Pharisees

a) They were not impressed
b) They pressed Him for an answerJohn 8:7a

3. The Lord Jesus raised Himself up and said to them

a) “He who is without sin among you” John 8:7b
b) “Let him throw a stone at her first” John 8:7c

4. And again, the Lord Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground (John 8:8)

CONVICTION OF THE HEART

1. Those who heard the word of the Lord Jesus

a) Scribes
b) Pharisees
c) Whoever they have recruited to help them

2. Their conscience convicted them

a) Beginning with the oldest even to the last
b) They went out (John 8:9a)

3. The Lord Jesus

a) He was left alone
b) The woman was left standing in the midst (John 8:9b)

A QUIET WORD WITH THE WOMAN

1. The Lord Jesus spoke to the woman alone John 8:10a

2. A question raised

a) “Woman, where are those accusers of yours?” John 8:10b
b) “Has no one condemned you?” John 8:10c

3. The quiet reply

a) “No one, Lord” John 8:11a
b) Deep gratitude must have been felt

4. A gentle word

a) No condemnation
“Neither do I condemn you” John 8:11b
b) Going forward
“Go and sin no more” John 8:11c

THE LAST WORD TO ALL WATCHING THE SCENE

1. The Needed Light

“I am the light of the world” John 8:12a

2. Following the Lord Jesus

“He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life” John 8:12b

THE GOSPEL OF THE LORD JESUS

1. The Dark world at large

a) It is full of darkness
b) There is a darkness that leads one to sin
c) This darkness is self-righteousness that seeks to condemn

2.  The Light of the Lord Jesus

a) It does not seek to condemn
b) The light He brings exposes sin (including self-righteousness)
c) The light of life:
i) The Lord receives
ii) He redeems
iii) He restores
iv) He revives
d) A new life commences
i) There is light amidst darkness
ii) There is a glimmer of hope
iii) There is comfort and strength
