INTRODUCTION

1. Dangers that must be noted

a) The word of God
i) Taken for granted
ii) Rejected
iii) Neglected
b) Lack of faith
i) Unbelief
ii) Little faith

2. One special problem addressed: “Money matters”

a) The problem of covetousness
b) The issue of wealth
i) Greed
ii) Materialism
c) The problem of the heart

3. Occasion:

a) A person from the crowd approached the Lord Jesus Christ
b) To tell his brother to divide his inheritance with him (Luke 12:13)

4. The response of the Lord

a) He did not come to be a judge
b) Or be an arbitrator (Luke 12:14)

5. The hidden danger

a) The problem of covetousness (Luke 12:15)
b) What life is not
i) Not about inheritance
ii) Not about abundance of possessions

THE PARABLE OF THE RICH FOOL
(Luke 12:13-21)

1. There was a rich man (Luke 12:16)

2. He had a very fruitful piece of land
High yields (Luke 12:16)

3. His plans

a) He has no room for the extra crops coming in
b) He would tear down the present building and build a new bigger barns
c) Then he can say to his soul:
i) Many goods laid up
ii) Many years of work
iii) Eat, drink and be merry

4. God’s Plan

a) He is a fool
b) What if he were to die that very night?
c) To whom would all his wealth go?
d) Death ends the best of plans

5. Lesson

a) Earthly riches only
b) Not rich towards God (Luke 12:21)

LESSONS FOR THE DISCIPLES

1. Do not worry about your life (Luke 12:22)

2. What is Life all about?

a) More than food
b) More than clothing

3. Consider

a) The ravens (Luke 12:24-26)
b) The lilies/ the grass (Luke 12:27-28)

4. The anxieties/ worries of life

a) Worrying (Luke 12:25)
b) An anxious mind (Luke 12:29)
c) Fear (Luke 12:32)

CHALLENGES

1. The problem of “little faith” (Luke 12:28)

a) This has to be dealt with
b) This cannot remain unresolved

2. Worldly mindset (Luke 12:30a)

a) The danger of worldly influence
b) The danger of becoming like the world

3. To trust our Father in Heaven (Luke 12:30)

a) He knows what we need
b) He will provide
c) As He has provided for the birds/ grass/ lilies

4. To seek the Kingdom of God (Luke 12:31)

a) God will give us His kingdom
b) He would see to our needs

5. To watch out for the heart

a) To learn how to give
b) To know what our Treasures are
i) Parable of the hidden treasure (Matthew 13:44)
ii) Parable of the Pearl of great price (Matthew 13:45)
iii) Parable of the Householder (Matthew 13:52)
c) To know where our Treasures should be
i) In heaven (Luke 12:33)
ii) Not on earth (Luke 12:33)
