Subject: “That you may believe” John 14:29

INTRODUCTION

1. Struggles in believing

a) The Disciples of the Lord Jesus struggled with their faith
b) There were a number of things they struggled with:
i) The deep teachings of the Lord Jesus
ii) His imminent death
iii) Their inability to grasp spiritual concepts fully

2. Identification with the disciples of old

a) We have our own set of struggles too
b) We need to identify them
c) We need to deal with them effectively

27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
28 You have heard Me say to you, ‘I am going away and coming back to you.’ If you loved Me, you would rejoice because I said, ‘I am going to the Father,’ for My Father is greater than I.
29 “And now I have told you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe.
30 I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in Me.
31 But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do. Arise, let us go from here.

John 14:27-31

1. The Peace the Lord Jesus gives

a) Not the kind of “peace” the world gives
i) Distraction
ii) Temporary
b) The heart need not be troubled
c) It need not be afraid
d) It is the peace that the Lord Jesus displayed as He faced death

2. Understanding of what the Lord Jesus had said earlier

a) ‘I am going away and coming back to you.’ John 14:28
b) How may this be better understood?
i) Through Love for the Lord Jesus
ii) Through the heart
c) The Lord Jesus was returning to the Father
i) This should be a cause of rejoicing
ii) The Disciples should have been happy for the Lord Jesus
iii) The Lord Jesus’ Relationship with the Father
i) Deep
ii) Full of affection
iii) Great joy to be able to return to the Father
“I am going to the Father,’ for My Father is greater than I.” John 14:28

3. That the Disciples may believe

a) The Lord Jesus told the Disciples
i) About His death
ii) About His resurrection
b) When these things are fulfilled
i) They may believe
ii) Their fears would be dispelled

4. The Ruler of this world

a) He would be personally setting the attack on the Lord Jesus
b) The Lord has nothing to do with him

5. That the world may know

a) That the Lord Jesus loved His Father
b) That the Father had given Him command
c) That the Lord Jesus would obey the Father fully

CONCLUSION

1. Important lines of thought

a) Peace
b) Love
c) Faith

2. The challenge was for the Disciples

a) To learn deeply
b) To emerge stronger and wiser
