Subject: “The Helper, the Holy Spirit” John 14:26

INTRODUCTION

1. The Doctrine of the Holy Spirit

a) A vital doctrine to be studied carefully
b) It is of great significance
i) Personally
ii) Practically
iii) Doctrinally

2. Review what has been taught:

16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—

17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

John 14:16-17

a) The Lord Jesus will pray to God the Father to give “Another Helper”
i) His prayer would be effective
ii) He knows the will of the Father
iii) He is the Son of God
iv) Whatever He would ask from the Father would be given
b) God will respond favourably to this prayer
i) He is well-pleased with His Son
ii) He will honour this request
c) The Helper
i) He will abide forever
ii) He is the Spirit of truth
iii) He is known to the Disciples already
iv) He dwells with them
v) He will be in the Disciples

3. Further Teaching about the Holy Spirit

25 “These things I have spoken to you while being present with you.

26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

a) The teachings of the Lord Jesus had been imparted to the Disciples
i) The teachings of the Lord Jesus also taught the multitudes
ii) But the teachings given to the Disciples were far deeper
iii) John focused on the Lord teaching His Disciples (John 13-17)
b) But could they:
i) Understand all that the Lord had taught?
ii) Remember all that had been taught?
iii) Apply these vital truths to life and ministry?

4. The Work of the Holy Spirit, the Helper

a) The Father will send in the name of the Lord Jesus
b) He will teach the Disciples all things
c) He will bring to remembrance all things that the Lord had taught

CONCLUSION

1. We need a correct understanding of the Person of the Holy Spirit

a) The Helper
b) The Holy Spirit
c) The Spirit of truth

2. We need to know His ministry

a) He will indwell believers
b) He will help us understand
c) He will teach all that the Lord Jesus had taught
d) He will help us remember what has been taught

3. We need to be:

a) Diligent pupils
b) Faithful
c) Humble
