Subject: An eternal hope

INTRODUCTION

1. The subject of Death

a) It is a difficult subject to grapple with
b) It troubled even the Disciples of the Lord Jesus

2. Vital truths:

a) To understand
b) To believe in

THE TROUBLED HEARTS OF THE DISCIPLES

1 “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.

In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.

And where I go you know, and the way you know.”

John 14:1-4

1. What troubled the hearts of the Disciples?

a) Thoughts of Death
i) The death of the Lord Jesus
ii) Their own death (human mortality)
b) The meaning of the word “troubled”
i) Distress
ii) Sadness
iii) A sense of loss

2. What caused this sense of being “troubled?”

a) Emotions
b) A lack of knowledge
c) A lack of faith

THE PLACE OF FAITH

1. The word “believe”

a) It is to have faith
b) It is to have a certain faith

2. Believing in God

a) Often, a general understanding of faith in God
b) A traditional idea
c) The Disciples were Jews
i) They were brought up to speak of believing in God
ii) Historical
iii) National
iv) Cultural
v) Formal

3. Believing in the Lord Jesus Christ

a) Specific
b) Personal
c) Relational
d) Clear and definite faith

KNOWLEDGE OF GOD AND HIS DWELLING PLACE

1. In God’s House

a) There are many “rooms”
b) Translated “mansions”

2. Preparation of a Place

a) Figure of speech 
“I go and prepare a place for you”
i) The death of the Lord Jesus was in mind
ii) He must die in our place
iii) He will rise from the dead
iv) He must conquer Satan and Death
b) This was fulfilled
14 Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,
15 and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. Hebrews 2:14-15
i) The Lord Jesus partook of flesh and blood
ii) Through His death, He destroyed Satan’s power of death
iii) The fear of death is overcome
iv) We need not be in bondage to the fear of death

TOGETHER WITH THE LORD JESUS CHRIST FOREVER

1. The Lord Jesus

a) He would come and receive us to Himself
b) We would be with Him forever in God’s house

2. This is a wonderfully comforting thought if we have faith in the Lord Jesus

a) The Disciples must find this faith
b) They must triumph over their fears/ distress

CONCLUSION

1. The fear of Death

a) This must be discussed
b) This must be dealt with

2. The bondage that Fear brings

a) Bondage to the Devil
b) Faith is adversely affected
c) Distress can cause:
i) Emotional malfunction
ii) Spiritual incapacity

3. The need to have a stronger faith:

a) Through Clarity
b) Resulting in Certainty
