Subject: The law of the Spirit

INTRODUCTION

1. The word “law” was used quite extensively by the apostle Paul (Romans 7-8)

2. The word “law” has the following nuances:

a) Authority
b) Power
c) Strong influence
d) Impact

3. Paul used the following phrases

a) The law of God (Romans 7:25b)
b) The law of sin (Romans 7:23b, 25c)
c) The law of the mind (Romans 7:23a)

4. He introduced a new phrase

“The law of the Spirit” Romans 8:1

1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.

Romans 8:1-2

ALL WHO IN THE LORD JESUS CHRIST

1. We have been justified by the Lord

a) By God’s grace
b) By the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ
c) The righteousness of the Lord Jesus has been imputed to us
d) Thus, we do not stand condemned before God

2. There is no condemnation

a) Though we are weak
b) Though we struggle with sin
c) Though we falter and fall into sin

3. The law of the Spirit

a) He indwells (Ephesians 1:13-14)
b) He enables us to be born again (John 3)
c) He regenerates and gives life
d) Hence, He is called the Spirit of life

4. How this works out

a) The Holy Spirit gives new life
b) He enables us so that we do not walk according to the flesh
c) We walk according to the leading of the Spirit
d) He is able to set us free from being bound by sin
e) He liberates us from the law of sin and death
f) This is great news
g) The Christian life can be victorious through the ministry of the Holy Spirit
h) There is every reason not to lose heart in our faith in the Lord Jesus

THE WORK OF THE SPIRIT

1. It is invisible

2. It is deep

3. It is life-changing

Romans 8 was written to describe the vital role and work of the Holy Spirit in the life of every believer!
