Subject: The problem of Sin

12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned— 

13 (For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 

14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.

Romans 5:12-14

1. How did sin enter into the world?

a) Through one man, Adam (Genesis 3)
b) Death was forewarned

2. What is the ultimate consequence of sin?

a) The ultimate consequence of sin is Death!
b) All have sinned and Death comes to all

3. When did sin begin?

a) Sin was found in Satan when he rebelled and was thrown out of heaven
b) It was Satan who in the form of a serpent tempted Eve and Adam
c) Though there was no Law then, sin was already in the world

4. The place of the Law

a) The judgments of the law were not stated because it did not exist in the formal state
b) Thus, sin could not be imputed and punished according to the law

5. Nevertheless sin reigned

a) From Adam the first man
b) To Moses who was God’s special servant

6. The sin of Adam and Eve

a) Eve was deceived and sinned
b) Adam was not deceived but he sinned because he disobeyed
14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. 
15 Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control.   
1 Timothy 2:14-15
i) Eve was deceived
ii) Adam disobeyed
iii) Both transgressed

7. Those who did not sin in the same manner

a) We may not sin as Adam and Eve did
b) But the fact is that we sin against the Lord
c) Three aspects of sin may be highlighted:
i) Sin is when we fail to keep God’s commandments
ii) Transgression is when we break His commandments
iii) Iniquity speaks of the deeper problem of evil in the heart

8. Adam as a Type

a) A representation
b) An example
c) Adam is the first Man
d) Adam is a Type of the Lord Jesus

9. The Lord Jesus

a) He was without sin
b) He was able to resist all sin
c) He remained sinless
d) Thus, He was able to become the Saviour of Mankind

1. Sin is a serious problem

2. It must be comprehended deeply

3. It can cause great problems in life

4. The Law is ineffective against sin

5. Only the Lord Jesus can deal with sin effectively
