A Special Word from the Lord to Moses

Text: Exodus 19:9-15

A SPECIAL WORD FROM THE LORD TO MOSES

1. God’s special endorsement of Moses

a) God had chosen Moses to be His servant
b) Moses had proven himself as a specially anointed servant of God
c) He would once again reinforce this truth

2. God’s appearance in a cloud

a) He will come to Moses
b) In a thick cloud
c) It ought to be obvious that Moses was God’s chosen servant
d) They will hear God’s voice
e) They will believe in Moses as God’s special servant

3. Moses related all these things to the children of Israel   (Exodus 19:9)

4. Context:

a) The children of Israel kept doubting Moses
b) They kept murmuring against him
c) They kept contending with him
i) Complaining about water   (Exodus 16:24)
ii) Complaining about food   (Exodus 17:3)
iii) Complaining about water again   (Exodus 17:1-7)

PREPARATION FOR GOD TO SPEAK TO THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL

1. Consecration   (Exodus 19:10)

a) Consecration concept to be taught
b) Washing of clothes
c) Clean clothes to be worn
d) Two days for preparation
e) On the third day God would appear before His people

2. God would then descend to Mount Sinai and speak to the children of Israel   (Exodus 19:11)

3. Boundaries to be set for the people   (Exodus 19:12)

a) Do not go up to the mountain
b) Do not touch the base

4. To ensure that this order is upheld   (Exodus 19:13)

a) Trespassers would be stoned to death
b) Or they would be shot to death
c) Trumpets would be blown

EXHORTATION AND PREPARATION

1. Moses went down from the mountain to speak to the children of Israel   (Exodus 19:15)

2. They were exhorted to be ready for the third day   (Exodus 19:15)

3. The people complied and washed their clothes   (Exodus 19:15)
