Punishment of the Wicked

Text: Deuteronomy 25:1-10

1. Punishment of the wicked

a) Dispute between the righteous and the wicked
b) Before the court   (Deuteronomy 25:1)
c) The wicked convicted
d) Punishment: 40 blows maximum   (Deuteronomy 25:3; 2 Corinthians 11:24)
e) Lest a brother is humiliated before your eyes

2. The working ox

a) It must not be muzzled
b) While it is treading out the grain   (1 Corinthians 9:9)

3. A special Levirate custom

(Latin… Levir…. Brother-in-law)
a) Brothers living together
b) Brother dies
c) Surviving brother to marry the widow
d) The first-born son would take the name of the deceased brother   (Deuteronomy 25:6)

4. Opting out

a) This has to be done before the elders   (Deuteronomy 25:7)
b) The wife may bring this to the attention of the elders
c) The brother-in-law has to make his choice publicly known
d) The sister-in-law may do the following:
i) Remove his sandal
ii) Spit in his face
iii) The brother-in-law will be given a bad name
