Text: Deuteronomy 16:13-15; Leviticus 23:33-36, 39-44

THE FEAST OF TABERNACLES

1. Duration of this Feast

Seven days   (Deuteronomy 16)

2. When?

15th Day of the Seventh Month

3. Reasons: –

a) To remember the days when they wandered in the Wilderness
b) To celebrate the gathering of all fruits in the land

4. To be made a statute forever   (Leviticus 23:41)

ESSENTIALS OF THE FEAST

1. First Day

a) Holy convocation
b) No customary work   (Leviticus 23:39)
c) The fruit of beautiful trees   (Leviticus 23:40a)
d) Cutting of branches of Palm trees   (Leviticus 23:40b)
e) The boughs of leafy trees   (Leviticus 23:40c)
f) Willows of the brooks   (Leviticus 23:40d)

2. Throughout the Seven days

a) Offerings made by fire   (Leviticus 23:36)
b) You shall rejoice in the Lord   (Leviticus 23:40e; Deuteronomy 16:14)

3. On the Eight Day

a) A sacred assembly (holy convocation)   (Leviticus 23:36)
b) No customary work   (Leviticus 23:36)

4. Sabbath rest

a) First Day
b) Eight Day   (Leviticus 23:39)

5. To live in Booths

a) For seven days   (Leviticus 23:41)
b) All who are natives in Israel   (Leviticus 23:41)

6. High Instructive Value

a) That it might learn that God Himself made Israel do this
(live in tents for a week)
b) That the present generation may better regard the pilgrims of yesteryear   (Leviticus 23:43)

7. This Feast was to be kept by order of the Lord God Himself   (Leviticus 23:43)

8. Participants of this Feast

a) Family   (Deuteronomy 16:14)
b) People who worked for the Family   (Deuteronomy 16:14)
c) Strangers   (Deuteronomy 16:14)
d) Fatherless   (Deuteronomy 16:14)
e) Widows   (Deuteronomy 16:14)

9. Promise of Blessing

a) To all who would obey
b) To all who believe and trust in the Lord
c) God will bless significantly and thus rejoicing would be obvious   (Deuteronomy 16:15)
