The Passover and the Feast of the Unleavened Bread

THE PASSOVER AND THE FEAST OF THE UNLEAVENED BREAD

1. Instituted before Israel was delivered from Egypt   (Exodus 12:1-14, 21-28)

2. Tied in closely with the Feast of the Unleavened Bread   (Exodus 12:15-20)

3. The Historical significance is described in Exodus 12:1-20

ESSENTIAL FEATURES

1. When?

First month of the year   (Exodus 12:2)

2. Passover Lamb   (Exodus 12:3)

a) Without blemish   (Exodus 12:5)
b) Male of the first year   (Exodus 12:5)
c) Either sheep/ goat   (Exodus 12:5)
d) Selected 4 days in advance   (Exodus 12:3, 6)
e) No leaven bread   (Exodus 12:8)

3. Egyptian Passover

a) Lamb to be killed at twilight   (Exodus 12:6)
b) Blood to be put on door posts
And lintel   (Exodus 12:7)
c) Lamb to be roasted and eaten (entrails too)
With bitter herbs   (Exodus 12:8)
d) Lamb not to be eaten raw or boiled   (Exodus 12:9)
e) No remains to be left   (Exodus 12:10)
f) Meal to be eaten with haste   (Exodus 12:11)
g) Belt on waist, sandals, staff in hand   (Exodus 12:11)

SIGNIFICANCE

1. God will pass through Egypt
In judgment   (Exodus 12:12)

2. But He will pass over every home that has
Blood on lintel and side posts   (Exodus 12:13)

3. It will be for a Memorial   (Exodus 12:14)

4. A feast of an everlasting ordinance   (Exodus 12:15)

5. The Passover was to be kept   (Deuteronomy 16:1-2)

FEAST OF THE UNLEAVENED BREAD

1. Seven days Feast   (Deuteronomy 16:3)

2. Bread of affliction   (Deuteronomy 16:3)

3. The day which God passed over Israel was to be remembered   (Deuteronomy 16:3)

4. No leaven is to be found   (Deuteronomy 16:4)

5. Sacrifice must be eaten and not kept overnight   (Deuteronomy 16:4)

6. Holy convocation at the end of the week   (Deuteronomy 16:8)

7. National holiday… no work   (Deuteronomy 16:8)

PROPHETIC ELEMENT TO BE NOTED

1. In the place which God chooses to make His name abide   (Deuteronomy 16:5, 7)

2. This place was identified as Jerusalem   (2 Chronicles 7:15-16)
