(I) PROPHETIC STATEMENTS OF JACOB CONCERNING HIS SONS II

(The rest of the sons)

1. Dan (Genesis 49:16-18)

a) A judge (Genesis 49:16a)

b) A serpent/ a viper that bites the horse’s heels (Genesis 49:17)

c) A Prayer: For salvation from the Lord (Genesis 49:18)


2. Gad (Genesis 49:19)

a) A troop shall tramp upon him (Genesis 49:19a)

b) But he shall triumph at last (Genesis 49:19b)


3. Asher (Genesis 49:20)

a) Wealth

b) Yielding royal dainties


4. Naphthali (Genesis 49:21)

a) A deer let loose

b) Uses beautiful words


5. A Joseph (Genesis 49:22-26)

a) A fruitful bough (Genesis 49:22)

b) Archers bitterly grieved him (reference to his brothers) (Genesis 49:23)

c) His bow remained in strength/ the arms of his hands were made strong by the mighty God of Jacob, the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel (Genesis 49:24)

d) Blessings from the Almighty God (Genesis 49:25)

e) Blessings excelled that of ancestors (Genesis 49:26a)

f) These blessings will be like a crown on Joseph’s head (Genesis 49:26c)


6. Benjamin (Genesis 49:27)

a) A ravenous wolf

b) He will devour the prey

c) He will divide the spoil

(II) PROPHECY AND BLESSING

Genesis 49:28

1. Some prophetic words were ominous

2. Therein is hope- that they will take heed and turn away from sin

3. Blessings are contingent upon obedience

 

(III) THE LAST CHARGE OF JACOB

Genesis 49:29-33

1. His final resting place is in a cave in Machpelah (Genesis 49:29)

2. This burial ground was bought by Abraham (Genesis 49:30)

3. This was their ancestral burial ground (Genesis 49:31-32)

 

(IV) THE DEMISE OF JACOB

1. He passed away shortly after all these instructions

2. He had a very full life

a) Redeemed

b) Protected

c) Provided

d) Wonderfully blessed
