(I) LAND OF CANAAN AFFECTED BY THE FAMINE

1. Jacob lived in Canaan

2. The land was affected by the Famine (Genesis 42:5)

3. His family was affected

(II) JACOB SENDS OUT HIS SONS TO EGYPT

1. Jacob was the patriarch (Genesis 42:1)

2. His sons did not know how to respond to the Famine (Genesis 42:1)

3. Jacob’s suggestion (Genesis 42:2)

a) Heard about grain being sold in Egypt

b) Sending the sons to Egypt to purchase food

c) So that they may survive the famine years

d) Jacob continued to play an active role in leading the family-clan

4. Ten sons were sent out (Genesis 42:3)

a) Numbers were important

i) For heavy purchases of food

ii) For protection

b) 10 sons were sent out to Egypt to purchase grain

5. Withholding of Benjamin (Genesis 42:4)

a) For fear of calamity befalling Benjamin

b) He was the youngest of his twelve sons

c) He was the second and last son of Rachel

d) Rachel died giving birth to Benjamin (Genesis 35:16-20)
