(I) JACOB’S JOURNEY TO HARAN

Genesis 28:10-11

1. A long journey

2. Hardship experienced

a) Sleeping out in the open

b) Having a stone for a pillow

(II) JACOB’S DREAM

Genesis 28:12

1. A ladder from earth to heaven

2. Angels of God ascending and descending

(III) A WORD FROM THE LORD

Genesis 28:13-15

1. Introducing Himself

“I am the LORD God of Abraham you father and the God of Isaac.” Genesis 28:13a

2. Divine Promises (Abrahamic Covenant reiterated)

a) Of the land

“The land on which you lie I will give to you and your descendants” Genesis 28:13b

b) Of descendants

“Also your descendants shall be as the dust of the earth; you shall spread abroad to the west and the east, to the north and the south” Genesis 28:14a

c) A blessing to all

“And in you and in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed” Genesis 28:14b

d) God’s Presence

“Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to the land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.” Genesis 28:15

(IV) JACOB’S RESPONSE

Genesis 28:16-22

1. Awoke from his sleep (Genesis 28:16)

2. Fear of the Lord (Genesis 28:17)

a) This is the house of the Lord

b) This is the gate of heaven

3. Set up his stone-pillow as a pillar (Genesis 28:18)

Called the place “Bethel”

4. Vow made (Genesis 28:20-22)

a) If

i) God will be with him

ii) And keep him

iii) And provide for him

iv) And enable him to return home in peace

b) Then

i) The LORD shall be his God

ii) This shall be God’s house

iii) He will give a tenth of all that he would earn
