(I) A SAD TURN IN THE STORY

1. Isaac (Genesis 27:1)

a) Old age

b) Poor eyesight (Legally blind)

2. Called Esau (Genesis 27:2-4)

a) I am old

b) I do not know the day of my death

c) Hunt game

d) Make me savoury food

e) Eat this one last time

f) Patriarchal Blessing promised

3. Esau

a) Left immediately to hunt for game

b) Eager to please the father and receive his blessing

(II) REBEKAH’S SCHEME

1. Overheard Isaac’s word to Esau (Genesis 27:5)

2. Called Jacob and informed him of Isaac’s plan (Genesis 27:6-7)

3. Plan of Rebekah

a) Two choice kids of the goats (Genesis 27:9)

b) Savoury soup to be offered to Isaac (Genesis 27:10)

c) Obtain the patriarchal blessing from Isaac (Genesis 27:10)

(III) JACOB’S FEAR

1. He is not Esau (Genesis 27:11)

a) He is smooth-skinned

b) Esau is hairy

2. The plan could backfire (Genesis 27:12)

a) The blessing may not be given

b) A curse may be pronounced

(IV) REBEKAH ALLAYS FEAR

1. She will bear the brunt of the curse (Genesis 27:13)

a) If that is possible at all

b) She was willing to take this risk

2. Jacob complies

a) The savoury soup is prepared (Genesis 27:14)

b) He dresses up as Esau (Genesis 27:15-16)

(V) JACOB ATTEMPTS TO DECEIVE HIS FATHER

1. He pretends he is Esau (Genesis 27:19)

2. He asks for the patriarchal blessing (Genesis 27:19)

(VI) ISAAC IS DECEIVED

1. He does his best to ascertain that Esau stood before him (Genesis 27:21-27)

2. He is deceived into believing that the man standing before him was indeed Esau (Genesis 27: 23-26)
