(I) SUCCESSOR OF KING JOSIAH

1. Jehoahaz

2. Son of King Josiah

3. A brief reign of 3 months (2 Kings 23:31)

4. Commentary of his reign

a) He did evil (2 Kings 23:32a)

b) He did not choose the way of his father King Josiah

c) He chose the way of the evil kings of Judah (e.g. Manasseh 2 Kings 21)

(II) OPPRESSION OF EGYPT

1. Pharaoh Necho imprisoned King Jehoahaz (2 Kings 23:33)

2. This was possible because after King Josiah’s defeat, Judah had to pay tribute to the Pharaoh

3. Other measures imposed by Pharaoh Necho

a) Tribute to be paid to Egypt

i) 100 talents of silver

ii) 1 talent of gold

b) Eliakim, the son of Jehoahaz was appointed the king

His name was changed to Jehoiakim

4. Death of Jehoahaz

He died in captivity- in Egypt (2 Kings 23:34)

(III) REIGN OF JEHOIAKIM (2 Kings 23:35-37)

1. He had to pay tribute to Egypt

2. He severely taxed Judah to raise the tribute money

3. Jehoiakim

a) Began reign at 25 years of age

b) He too chose to follow evil

4. Added woes (2 Kings 24:1-7)

a) King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon invaded the land

b) He made Judah his vassal for 3 years

c) Other enemies

i) Chaldeans

ii) Syrians

iii) Moabites

iv) Ammonites

5. Result

Destruction of Judah (2 Chronicles 24:2)
