JUDAH UNDER AMAZIAH (2 Kings 14:1-21)

(I) JUDAH UNDER AMAZIAH (2 Kings 14:1-21)

1. Amaziah succeeds Jehoash (Joash) to the throne at 25 years (2 Kings 14:1)

2. Features of his reign

a) He did what was right in the sight of God (2 Kings 14:3)

b) His role model was his father Joash (2 Kings 14:3b)

c) He did not measure up when compared to king David (2 Kings 14:3a)

d) The high places (idolatry) were not taken away (2 Kings 14: 4)

e) He executed the people who assassinate his father, King Joash (2 Kings 14:5)

f) He spared the children of the assassins (2 Kings 14:6)

g) Fought and defeated Edom (2 Kings 14:7)

3. Problem between Judah and Israel (2 Chronicles 25)

a) Amaziah wanted to go to war against Edom

b) He built up a huge army

c) He also hired mercenary soldiers from Israel to fight alongside

d) He was advised against this by a prophet of God

e) Amaziah heeded the words of the prophet and went on to defeat the Edomites

(called “people of Seir” 2 Chronicles 25:11)

4. Israel was angry and felt insulted at being dropped (2 Chronicles 25:13)

a) On their way home they burned down cities of Judah

b) They also killed 300 men from Judah (2 Chronicles 25:13)

5. Angry but foolish declaration of war against Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz

(2 Kings 14:8; 2 Chronicles 25:17-24)

a) He failed to heed the words of warning by a prophet of God

b) He also worshipped idols of the people of Seir (2 Kings 2514-15)

6. Jehoash mocked Amaziah with a parable (2 Kings 14:9-10)

a) Amaziah was warned not to allow his victory over Edom to go to his head (2 Kings 14:9)

b) Israel had a far stronger army than Judah at this point of time (2 Kings 14:10)

7. War between Judah and Israel (2 Kings 14:11-21)

a) Amaziah was defeated by Jehoash (2 Kings 14:13)

b) Amaziah was captured (2 Kings 14:14)

c) Jerusalem was looted by Jehoash’s army (2 Kings 14:13-14)

8. Amaziah was assassinated (2 Kings 14:18-20)

9. Azariah his son succeeded to the throne at 16 years of age (2 Kings 14:21)

His focus was on rebuilding Judah (2 Kings 14:22)

(II) ISRAEL UNDER JEROBOAM II (2 Kings 14:22-29)

1. Jeroboam succeeded Jehoash to the throne of Israel (2 Kings 14:23)

2. Bad Features of his reign

a) He had a long reign of 40 years (2 Kings 14:23)

b) He did evil in the sight of the Lord (2 Kings 14:24)

c) He practised the idolatry o Jeroboam (2 Kings 14:24)

3. Good features of his reign

a) He restored the territory of Israel (2 Kings 14:25, 28)

b) Jonah the prophet ministered in his reign (2 Kings 14:25)

c) Israel was delivered from destruction by the Lord (2 Kings 14:26-27)
