PONDERING APPROPRIATE RESPONSES TO THE LORD

What shall I render to the LORD for all His benefits to me? (Psalm 116:12)

1. I will take up the cup of salvation (Psalm 116:13a)

a) Salvation has many aspects
b) Deliverance (from tough problems)
c) Cup of salvation
i) Cup of libation
ii) An act of worship
iii) Remembering God and honouring Him

2. And call upon the name of the LORD (Psalm 116:13b)

a) Praying to God
b) Relating to Him
c) Establishing a walk of faith with the Lord

3. I will pay my vows to the LORD
Now in the presence of all His people Psalm 116:14 (also v. 18 with elaboration)

a) Promise made to the Lord
b) A solemn vow
c) Commitment to fulfil what has been vowed

4. O LORD, truly I am Your servant
I am Your servant, the son of Your maidservant
You have loosed my bonds Psalm 116:16

a) Humility
b) Commitment to serve humbly
c) A life-long commitment

5. I will offer to You the sacrifice of thanksgiving
And call upon the name of the LORD Psalm 116:17

a) An offering was often expressed in the form of a sacrifice
b) It was to be characterized by the spirit of “thanksgiving”
c) Calling upon the name of the Lord as promised
d) Public worship is in mind
i) In the courts of the LORD’s house
ii) In the midst of you, O Jerusalem
