"These were the chiefs of Edom"

Text: 1 Chronicles 1:54

THE KINGS OF EDOM

“Now these were the kings who reigned in the land of Edom
before a king reigned over the children of Israel:
Bela the son of Beor, and the name of his city was Dinhabah.
And when Bela died, Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his place.
When Jobab died, Husham of the land of the Temanites reigned in his place.
And when Husham died, Hadad the son of Bedad,
who attacked Midian in the field of Moab, reigned in his place.
The name of his city was Avith.
When Hadad died, Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his place.
And when Samlah died, Saul of Rehoboth-by-the-River reigned in his place.
When Saul died, Baal-Hanan the son of Achbor reigned in his place.
And when Baal-Hanan died, Hadad reigned in his place;
and the name of his city was Pai.
His wife’s name was Mehetabel the daughter of Matred,
the daughter of Mezahab. Hadad died also.
And the chiefs of Edom were Chief Timnah, Chief Aliah, Chief Jetheth,
Chief Aholibamah, Chief Elah, Chief Pinon, Chief Kenaz,
Chief Teman, Chief Mibzar, Chief Magdiel, and Chief Iram.
These were the chiefs of Edom.”

1. A brief history of the Edomites.

a) This gives us an understanding of who the Edomites were.

b) They were a painful thorn in the side of Israel.

2. There were two main lines:

a) The Line of Seir.

b) The line of Esau.

i) Esau had at least 2 wives.

ii) He brought his wives to greet Isaac and Rebekah.

iii) This brought grief to their hearts.

c) The two lines merged.

i) Esau or Edom as he was called became the dominant line.

ii) The Edomites were related to Israel.

iii) But they could not get along and there were many battles fought between them.

3. The Edomite Kingdom

a) They had kings long before Saul became Israel’s first ruler.

b) The Edomite was better organised than Israel was.

c) The kings of Edom always had sons to succeed to the throne.

d) A kingdom that is united tends to be stronger than one that was full of strife.
