"The sons of Shem"

Text: 1 Chronicles 1:17

THE LINE OF SHEM

The line of Shem was noted. From Shem came the patriarch Abraham. From Abraham came the line of Israel.

“The sons of Shem were Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad,
Lud, Aram, Uz, Hul, Gether, and Meshech.
Arphaxad begot Shelah, and Shelah begot Eber.
To Eber were born two sons:
the name of one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided;
and his brother’s name was Joktan.
Joktan begot Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, Hadoram,
Uzal, Diklah, Ebal, Abimael, Sheba, Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab.
All these were the sons of Joktan.
Shem, Arphaxad, Shelah, Eber, Peleg, Reu,
Serug, Nahor, Terah, and Abram, who is Abraham.
The sons of Abraham were Isaac and Ishmael.”

1. The notable sons of Shem.

a) Elam
This was Persia.

b) Asshur
This was Assyria.

c) Arphaxad
The ancestor of Abraham.

d) Uz was the hometown of Job (Job 1:1).

e) Peleg

i) This is a reference to the time of the Tower of Babel.

ii) This was where the earth was divided (Genesis 11:1-9).

2. Abraham

a) Isaac was named first.

b) Ishmael was listed as a son of Abraham.
