Praying For Enlightenment

The need for enlightenment

As we enter the second half of 2026, let us consider how we may deepen our understanding of the Lord and His Word. The Lord Jesus taught that we have been given the privilege to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 13:11). There are mysteries for us to discover through the Word of God, yet many have not made this a life goal. Many tend to hear and not understand…to see and yet not perceive (Matthew 13:14). The mysteries in the Lord’s Word continue to remain hidden to many.

The challenge is to find the right approach to the Word of the Lord. As we listen to and study the Lord’s Word, the Spirit of God must be involved to bring understanding and enlightenment. This was Paul’s prayer for the Ephesian church, that they might find enlightenment in their lives and ministries.

Praying for the Spirit of God to work

“That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him,” (Ephesians 1:17)

  1. As we study the Lord’s Word, it is vital that we do so with prayer.
  2. It is not with our own reasoning or thoughts that we can go deeper.
  3. When we pray, we enter the spiritual realm to seek the involvement of the Spirit of God.
  4. It is the Spirit of God who gives us the wisdom and revelation needed to understand.
  5. He would help us to discern the deep things of the knowledge of God.
  6. There will come greater spiritual understanding through the Word of God.
  7. The problem with many is that we do not pray for nor seek the Spirit’s involvement in our study of the Lord’s Word.
  8. Let us be challenged to go deeper in understanding the mysteries of God by praying for the Spirit of God’s involvement.

Praying for the enlightenment of the Spirit of God

“The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know…” (Ephesians 1:18)

  1. The word “understanding” in Greek is “kardia”, which means “heart”.
  2. The Spirit of God helps open the eyes of our hearts to understand.
  3. Light is given so that we may be able to see more deeply.
  4. The Spirit gives us the spiritual light and enlightenment to see not only with our minds but also with our hearts.
  5. We would be able to discover the deep truths of the mysteries of God.
  6. Let us be challenged to pray for the Spirit of God to enlighten us about the deep spiritual truths of God.

Enlightenment for life and ministry

The Lord’s Word should not be understood superficially. Through the Spirit’s involvement in our approach to the Lord’s Word, He will give us the enlightenment and understanding we need for our lives and ministries. In life, we need wisdom and discernment to make sound decisions. As servants of the Lord, we need enlightenment to guide us in fulfilling our ministries faithfully and fruitfully. Let us be challenged to go deeper in our study of the Lord’s Word. Let us seek the Spirit of God to guide us wisely in life and ministry.
