Title: You are a holy people to the LORD
Text: Deuteronomy 7:6

 

INTRODUCTION

1. The pronouncement to be holy had been made before (Exodus 19:6; Leviticus 19:2)

2. Why it was necessary to repeat such a pronouncement in Deuteronomy 7

a) To reiterate what had been taught before (this was the essence of this book)
b) The very real danger of forgetting
c) To reinforce this truth to a new generation
3. Full obedience is one way to be a holy people to the LORD our God

ADDRESSING THE THINGS THAT PREVENT OBEDIENCE (Deuteronomy 7:1-5, 16-26)

1. Moses warned about the influence which could prevent them from obeying God’s command

a) Commands had been given to prevent them from being influenced
b) How the external influence from these nations could begin
i. Making a covenant (a treaty or an agreement) with them
ii. Showing them mercy
iii. The union of marriage
c) Terrible consequences if the nation of Israel was to be influenced badly

2. A warning about the internal struggle which could stop them from obeying God’s command

a) God’s clear commands were reiterated by Moses once again
b) Moses knew of the people’s struggle with fear
c) He encouraged them
i. He encouraged them to remember God and His deeds
ii. He encouraged them to believe in what God shall do for them
iii. He encouraged them that God was among them

AN UPLIFTING WORD CONCERNING THOSE HOLY TO GOD (Deuteronomy 7:6-11)

1. Features of a people who were holy to the LORD their God

a) They were graciously declared to be holy
b) They were chosen
c) They were loved by God

2. Those declared to be holy needed to respond by practising holiness

a) Know the LORD their God
b) Keep and observe what had been commanded that day

RELEVANT LESSONS WE CAN TAKE AWAY

1. Let us know, in Christ, we too are holy to our God (1 Peter 2:9-10)

2. Equipped with this knowledge, let us make every effort to practise holiness in our lives

a) Deepen our knowledge of God
b) Obey His words

3. Let us also find grace from God to obey God’s word

a) Deal with the negative influences in our lives
b) Battle the fears that stop us from obeying God’s word
