"You will remember your evil ways"

Text: Ezekiel 36:31

REMEMBERING THE PAST

Israel conveniently forgot God and all He had done for the nation. Instead, it chose to honour idols that had done nothing for the people. The conscience of the nation had become dull and insensitive over the years. But there would come a time when Israel would remember the terribly sinful past!

“‘Then you will remember your evil ways
and your deeds that were not good;
and you will loathe yourselves in your own sight,
for your iniquities and yourselves in your own sight,
for your iniquities and your abominations.
Not for your sake do I do this,’ says the Lord God,
‘let it be known to you.
Be ashamed and confounded for your own ways,
O house of Israel!'”
Ezekiel 36:31-32

1. When the conscience awakens.

a) Israel would remember its evil ways.

b) The evil deeds done would be remembered with deep remorse.

2. Self-loathing.

a) The people would loathe themselves as they recalled.

b) On their own, in their plain sight, the people would remember with shame:

i) Their iniquities.

ii) Their abominable deeds.

iii) These were influenced because of their idolatrous ways.

3. Not for the sake of Israel.

a) This was a firm reminder to the nation.

b) They must not think that God’s plan to bless them was because of their intrinsic goodness.

4. Shame on the nation.

a) The nation should recall their past and be filled.

b) They should also rebuke themselves for being such a confounded past.

c) Their evil deeds in the past must never be dismissed lightly.

5. The path of repentance.

a) This is the path of repentance.

b) Israel must walk on this path and be filled with remorse and sorrow.

c) Whatever God would do with the nation would be based solely on God’s bountiful mercy.
