FEAR THE LORD

Text: Psalm 34
15 June 2025

A VERY PERSONAL PSALM

Psalm 34 was written by King David remembering a time when he felt overwhelmed by circumstances in his life. He was in Philistine territory, and he pretended madness because he was fearful of being killed by Abimelech, a Philistine king. This episode moved him to write Psalm 34.

A CALL TO FEAR THE LORD

David experienced deep personal fears for his life. In the midst of these fears he discovered afresh what it means to have the Fear of the Lord in his heart.

4 I sought the LORD, and He heard me,
And delivered me from all my fears.

They looked to Him and were radiant,
And their faces were not ashamed.

This poor man cried out, and the LORD heard him,
And saved him out of all his troubles.

The angel of the LORD encamps all around those who fear Him,
And delivers them.

Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good;
Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!

Oh, fear the LORD, you His saints!
There is no want to those who fear Him.

10 The young lions lack and suffer hunger;
But those who seek the LORD shall not lack any good thing.     Psalm 34:4-10
