Text: Romans 15

Subject: “Rejoice, O Gentiles”

10 And again he says:

“Rejoice, O Gentiles, with His people!”

11 And again:

“Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles! Laud Him, all you peoples!”

12 And again, Isaiah says:

“There shall be a root of Jesse; And He who shall rise to reign over the Gentiles, In Him the Gentiles shall hope.”

13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 15:10-13

1. This word of exhortation was written:

a) For Jewish believers
b) For Gentile believers

2. This was a call to practise rejoicing in the Lord

3. Both are to rejoice together

CITING A SERIES OF TEXTS FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT

1. Citing Deuteronomy

And again he says:

“Rejoice, O Gentiles, with His people!” Romans 15:10

a) This was a phrase taken from Deuteronomy 32:43
b) This was a prophetic word from Moses
i) He foresaw Gentiles coming to faith
ii) This was a cause for rejoicing indeed
c) Jews who speak of trusting in the writings of Moses must ponder this prophetic word

2. Citing the Psalms

And again:

“Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles! Laud Him, all you peoples!” Romans 15:11

a) This was a word drawn from Psalm 117:1
b) The writer was exhorting Gentiles to praise the Lord

3. Citing Isaiah

And again, Isaiah says:

“There shall be a root of Jesse; And He who shall rise to reign over the Gentiles, In Him the Gentiles shall hope.” Romans 15:12

b) The Messiah would arise from the root of Jesse
c) He would reign not only over Israel
d) He would also reign over Gentiles

b) The Prophets (Navim) Isaiah 11:2
c) The Writings (Ketuvim) Psalm 117:1

3. Paul cited three sources

a) From the Torah Deuteronomy
b) From the Writings Psalms
c) From the Prophets Isaiah

4. The weight of these citations

a) Gentiles are included in God’s plan of salvation
b) Praise should be given to God for His mercy
c) All should seek to glorify God

THE GOD OF HOPE

13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 15:13

1. The Lord is called “The God of hope”

2. Believers are to abound in hope

3. A prayer for the Church in Rome

a) To be filled with joy and peace
b) In believing in God
c) Through the power of the Holy Spirit
