NOT WEAK IN FAITH

Text: Romans 4

ABRAHAM’S FAITH

Abraham was called “a friend of God” (Isaiah 41:8; James 2:23). One of the possible reasons why he was called God’s friend was his faith. 

19 And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb. 

20 He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, 

21 and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform.

22 And therefore “it was accounted to him for righteousness.”     Romans 4:19-22

  1. A description of Abraham’s faith

a) He was “not weak in faith”

b) This is called a “litotes”

c) This is an ironic understatement

d) Meaning: Abraham was “strong in faith”

  1. How would we know that he was strong in faith?

a) He was a hundred years old

b) Sarah was beyond child-bearing age

c) Nevertheless, he believed in God’s promise 

  1. How did he develop such a strong faith?

a) He did not waver in faith

b) He rejected unbelief

c) He sought to strengthen his faith

d) He was full convinced that God was able to keep His word

GOD HONOURED HIS FAITH

  1. God appreciated his faith
  1. It was accounted as righteousness
  1. Our challenge is to cultivate our faith as Abraham did
