MEDITATION
Exodus 22:16-17
16 “If a man entices a virgin who is not betrothed, and lies with her, he shall surely pay the bride-price for her to be his wife.
17 If her father utterly refuses to give her to him, he shall pay money according to the bride-price of virgins.
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. Marriage in the ancient days
a. It was not uncommon for girls to be married at a young age.
b. The word “virgin”
i. It can describe a teenager.
ii. Girls who are in their teens can get married.
2. Enticement
a. There was a law against “enticement”.
b. In modern day language, this would be called “grooming”.
c. A teenage girl can be easily enticed.
3. If an adult were to do this
a. He must marry the girl.
b. He must give a dowry to the girl and her family.
4. If the father of the girl rejects the man
a. He has the right to refuse to give his daughter to be married to such a man.
b. The man is still required to pay the bride price.
c. This price can be quite steep.
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS LAW
1. To protect innocent young girls.
2. To penalise man who preyed on young innocent girls.
3. Girls in the ancient days:
a. Their main focus: “To get married”.
b. There were hardly any career options.
4. Marriages
a. Marriages were usually arranged by a matchmaker.
b. If a girl had been raped the chances of having a good marriage would be rather slim.
