MEDITATION
Genesis 16:11-12
11 And the Angel of the LORD said to her: “Behold, you are with child, And you shall bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael, Because the LORD has heard your affliction.
12 He shall be a wild man; His hand shall be against every man, And every man’s hand against him. And he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.”
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. A further word from the Angel of the LORD
a. This was a source of comfort.
i. The Angel of the LORD expressed knowledge of her pregnancy.
ii. She would bear a son safely.
b. A special name given by the Angel of the LORD:
i. The baby’s name would be called “Ishmael”.
ii. The name means, “Heard by the LORD”.
iii. Hagar’s prayer to the LORD in her affliction had been heard.
2. Prediction about the future of Ishmael
a. He will become “a wild man”.
b. He will find himself at odds with people.
i. His hand will be against people.
ii. In response, they would also raise their hands against him.
c. But he will survive and he will dwell in the presence of his brethren.
