The Size Of The Catch
Text: John 21: 11 - 12
THE SIZE OF THE CATCH
The size of the catch was remembered and detailed in this heart-warming story. There were precious lessons to be learned.
“Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken. Jesus said to them, ‘Come and eat breakfast.’ Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, ‘Who are You?’ – knowing that it was the Lord.”
John 21:11-12
1. “Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land”
a. Peter had wanted to swim to the shore to greet the Lord.
b. But he ended up helping his fellow-fishermen to haul in the fish.
i. They may have asked him to help.
ii. He must have seen and understood the need to help bring in the huge catch.
2. “Full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken”
a. This was a significant catch.
b. Thus, two details were noted:
i. The fish were large.
ii. There were one hundred and fifty-three of them.
c. That the net did not break was also not insignificant.
i. This too was part of the grace and blessing they experienced.
ii. These details were not lost on the fishermen.
3. “Jesus said to them, ‘Come and eat breakfast’”
a. These were kind and gentle words.
b. Jesus knew they were hungry and tired.
c. A hot breakfast would be very welcome indeed.
d. This would be even more significant because the Lord Jesus Himself had prepared the breakfast.
4. “Yet none of the disciples dared to ask Him, ‘Who are You?’- knowing that it was the Lord”
a. There was a bit of embarrassing awkwardness.
b. The disciples knew that it was the Lord but they did not know how to respond to Him appropriately.
