The Debate on the Fatherhood of God
Text: John 8: 42
THE DEBATE ON THE FATHERHOOD OF GOD
Jesus was ever the patient Teacher. He went on to discuss the doctrine of the Fatherhood of God.
“Jesus said to them, ‘If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me.’”
John 8:42
1. “Jesus said to them”
a) He was willing to engage them on the subject of the Fatherhood of God.
b) He would be delighted if their claim on the Fatherhood of God was indeed true.
2. Some challenges to their statement
a. “If God were your Father, you would love Me”
b. This was a “conditional sentence”.
i. If the first part is true
ii. Then the second p.art would follow as a natural consequence.
c. If God was indeed their Father as the Jews claimed, then they would have loved Jesus.
d. The fact was obvious!
i. The Jews did not love Jesus.
ii. How could they claim that God was their Father?
3. Important truths
a. “I proceeded forth and came from God”
i. This should have been obvious.
ii. Jesus knew that this was not understood by the Jews.
iii. Thus, He stated this truth as plainly as possible.
b. “Nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me”
i. All the prophets, the servants of God would make this claim.
ii. They had not come in their own rights.
iii. They had been sent by God.
iv. God would confirm the identity and the ministry of His servants.
v. That Jesus was that special Servant of God was confirmed many times through the many mighty miracles He performed.
