"Nineveh is laid waste"

Text: Nahum 3:7

THE JUDGMENT OF NINEVEH

The Lord’s judgment of Nineveh was proclaimed solemnly. The wicked empire would be destroyed ultimately.

“‘Behold, I am against you,’ says the LORD of hosts;
‘I will lift your skirts over your face,
I will show the nations your nakedness,
And the kingdoms your shame.
I will cast abominable filth upon you,
Make you vile,
And make you a spectacle.
It shall come to pass that all who look upon you
Will flee from you, and say,
‘Nineveh is laid waste! Who will bemoan her?’
Where shall I seek comforters for you?'”
Nahum 3:5-7

1. “‘Behold, I am against you,’ says the LORD of hosts”

a) This was the second pronouncement of the Lord against Nineveh (Nahum 2:13).
b) The repeat statement was to bring an emphasis.

2. The shame of Nineveh

a) The defeat of the nation would be their shame.
b) Instead of their finery, there would only be nakedness.
c) All kingdoms would see how Nineveh would be soundly devastated by the Lord.

3. Nineveh would become a public spectacle

a) “Abominable filth”
It would become like a rubbish dump!
b) The great city of Nineveh would be vile and revolting.

4. Passersby

a) They would flee from the mere sight of Nineveh.
b) They would pass comments on the city as they passed by.
i) “Nineveh is laid waste”
A foregone sad reality.
ii) “Who will bemoan her”
There would be no sympathizers found!
iii) “Where shall I seek comforters for you”
Assyria did not seek allies. They were so arrogant and cruel in their contempt for their enemies.

The demise of the Assyrian capital would gain no sympathy from anyone! No one would offer a word of comfort to the devastated Assyrian capital.
