INTRODUCTION

1. Understanding Worship

a) Personal Worship
b) Public Worship

2. Essential Elements of Worship

a) Our regard for God expressed
b) External Expression of this regard for God
In the form of an offering
c) The Internal and Invisible regard for God
Unseen except by God

3. To learn from the Scriptures

a) How we may avoid offering worship that would be rejected
b) How to offer worship that would be respected (accepted) by God

THE FIRST-MENTIONED WORSHIP IN THE SCRIPTURES

1. Cain’s worship of God
He brought an offering of the fruit of the ground
to the LORD Genesis 4:3

2. Abel’s worship of God
He brought of the firstborn of his flock
And of their fat Genesis 4:3

DESCRIPTION OF WORSHIP

1. Personal Worship

a) Cain on his own
b) Abel on his own

2. The bringing of an offering

a) Natural response
b) Appropriate response to God

3. Both Cain and Abel offered Worship

a) On the surface both offered Worship
b) But they were not received by God in the same way

THE RESPONSE OF THE LORD

1. God respected Abel and his offering Genesis 4:4

2. God did not respect Cain and his offering Genesis 4:5

VITAL LESSONS TO BE LEARNED

1. We cannot assume the following:

a) That all kinds of worship are the same
b) That any form of worship is automatically acceptable to God

2. We must learn that God reserves the right

a) To accept (respect) worship offered to Him
b) To reject (no respect) worship offered to Him

LESSONS POST-WORSHIP

1. Cain was very angry Genesis 4:5a

2. His countenance fell Genesis 4:5b

GOD ADDRESSES THE PROBLEM

1. Dealing with the problem of anger forthrightly

a) Why are you angry? Genesis 4:6a
b) Why has your countenance fallen? Genesis 4:6b

2. Encouragement to examine the heart

a) If you do well, will you not be accepted? Genesis 4:7a
b) And if you do not do well,
sin lies at the door Genesis 4:7b
c) And its desire is for you Genesis 4:7c
d) But you should rule over it Genesis 4:7d

THE POWER OF SIN

1. Cain and Abel talked to each other Genesis 4:8a

2. Cain rose up and killed him Genesis 4:8b

3. Cain is confronted by God
“Where is Abel your brother?” Genesis 4:9a

4. Cain replies rudely

a) “I do not know” Genesis 4:9b
b) “Am I my brother’s keeper?” Genesis 4:9c

THE JUDGMENT AGAINST CAIN

1. Cursed from the earth
“The earth will not yield its strength to you” Genesis 4:11

2. A fugitive and a vagabond Genesis 4:12

3. The protest of Cain
“My punishment is greater than I can bear” Genesis 4:13
