(I) DISTRESS THREATENS TO ROB US OF JOY IN LIFE

1. Caused by people who wish us harm

“How long, O you sons of men, Will you turn my glory to shame?…” Psalm 4:2

2. Caused by people who pursue worthless goals

“…How long will you love worthlessness And seek falsehood? Psalm 4:2b

3. Caused by people who spread despair

“There are many who say, ‘Who will show us any good?’ ” Psalm 4:6

(II) DISTRESS CAN BE DISPELLED

1. Practice of Prayer can dispel distress

“Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness!
You have relieved me in my distress;
Have mercy on me, and hear my prayer.”
Psalm 4:1

a) Pleading humbly for mercy

“…Have mercy on me, and hear my prayer.” Psalm 4:1b

b) Pleading for God’s favour

“…LORD, lift up the light of Your countenance upon us.” Psalm 4:6b

2. Practice of Meditation can dispel distress

“Be angry, and do not sin.
Meditate within your heart on your bed, and be still.”
Psalm 4:4

a) Anger need not stay

b) Sin arising from anger need not prevail

c) Stillness of heart can result

3. Practice of Trust can dispel distress

“Offer the sacrifice of righteousness, And put your trust in the LORD.” Psalm 4:5

(III) DISTRESS CAN BE WONDERFULLY REPLACED

1. Gladness of heart

“You have put gladness in my heart…” Psalm 4:7a

2. Great gladness

“…More than in the season that their grain and wine increased.” Psalm 4:7b

3. Peace

“I will both lie down in peace, and sleep…” Psalm 4:8a

4. Safety

“…For You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.” Psalm 4:8b
