Text: Matthew 9:18-26; Mark 5:21-43; Luke 8:40-56

Title: “Your faith has made you well”

REVIEW

1. What is Faith?

a) It is to believe in the Lord Jesus
b) It is to trust in Him

2. What does Faith result in?

a) Our salvation
b) Our hope in heaven

3. What about Faith in our daily life?

a) Two stories are told side by side
b) They are to be read together

THE FAITH-STORY OF A MAN CALLED JAIRUS

1. He was called a “ruler of the synagogue” (Mark 5:22)

2. He had a little daughter (Mark 5:23)
She was 12 years old and dying (Luke 8:42)

3. He came to Jesus and begged Him to go to his house
So that He could heal his daughter (Mark 5:23)

a) Did he have faith?
b) Did he believe that Jesus could heal his daughter?
c) She was so ill, that she was at the point of death (Mark 5:23)

4. Jesus was kind and gracious and so He planned to go to his house

THE FAITH STORY OF AN UNNAMED WOMAN

1. Great suffering

a) She had been suffering for 12 years (Mark 5:25)
b) She had suffered much due to the treatment in those days (Mark 5:26)
c) She had spent all her money (Mark 5:26)
d) But she was no better (Mark 5:26)

2. Great news heard

a) She heard that Jesus was nearby (Mark 5:27)
b) She had a thought:
It was a thought of faith!
i) If only I may touch His clothes
ii) I shall be made well (Mark 5:28)

3. An act of Faith
From a thought of faith to an act of faith!

a) She touched the hem of Jesus’ garment (Matthew 9:20)
b) She felt well instantly; she was cured

4. The Gentle Response of the Lord Jesus

a) Jesus turned around and said
“Who touched Me?” (Luke 8:45)
b) The Disciples were surprised Jesus asked that question
c) But Jesus waited patiently for the woman to respond

5. The fear of the woman

a) She could not stay hidden
b) She came to Jesus trembling (Luke 8:47)
c) She explained why she had touched Jesus
d) She also testified that she was healed (Luke 8:47)

6. The blessing of the Lord Jesus

a) “Daughter, be of good cheer” (Luke 8:48)
b) “Your faith has made you well”
c) Her faith was commended

BACK TO THE STORY OF JAIRUS

1. Jesus took time to speak to the woman

2. While He was still speaking, someone came from the home of Jairus

a) Your daughter is dead
b) Do not trouble the Teacher (Luke 8:49)

3. Was the faith of Jairus in vain?

a) He had placed his faith in Jesus
b) Jesus was going to his house
c) But Jesus had stopped along the way to heal and speak to someone
d) Was Jesus too late?

4. A special lesson to be learned by Jairus

a) Do not be afraid
b) Only believe
c) And she will be made well (Luke 8:50)

5. At the home of Jairus

a) All wept and mourned (Luke 8:52)
b) Jesus spoke to the mourners
i) Do not weep
ii) She is not dead
iii) But sleeping (Luke 8:52)
c) Response of those who did not have faith
i) They ridiculed Jesus
ii) They knew that the little girl had died (Luke 8:53)

6. A special Miracle

a) He put all the mourners outside
b) He spoke to the little girl
“Little girl, arise” (Luke 8:54)
c) The spirit of the little girl returned
d) She arose immediately
e) She was given something to eat (Luke 8:55)

GREAT LESSONS OF FAITH

1. The Focus of faith is Jesus Himself
(For the poor, unnamed woman)

a) She learned more about Jesus
i) He had power
ii) He was gentle and kind
iii) He was gracious and loving
b) She learned much about faith
i) Thought
ii) Deed

2. The Focus of Faith must Remain Strong
(For Jairus, the ruler of the synagogue)

a) He learned how to “only believe”
b) He learned to trust against all odds

3. Faith in the Lord Jesus must Deepen
For the Disciples

a) Their understanding deepened
b) Their faith increased. They added to their knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ
