The Problem Of The Promotion Of Self

Does the Bible touch on the issue of greatness? Yes, it does. One day, the disciples of Jesus were arguing with each other about who is the greatest in the kingdom of God. When they could not find an answer to the question, they turned to the Lord Jesus.

“At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, ‘Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?'”
Matthew 18:1

The problem that the disciples were grappling with was the issue of the promotion of self. All of them wanted to be great in the kingdom of God. It was this desire for self promotion that was wrong. The disciples were very much focused on themselves. The Lord Jesus had to deal with this problem forthrightly.

Having A Correct View Of Greatness

The Lord Jesus had to help them understand what is true greatness.

1. Humility To Enter The Kingdom Of God

“Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.”
Matthew 18:3

In order to speak of being great in the kingdom of God, you first have to be in it. The only way we can get into the kingdom of God is through humbling ourselves as little children. It is seeking to humbly and readily believe in the Lord Jesus and be converted. This would deflate any amount of self-pride that we may have.

2. Sustained Humility

“Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”
Matthew 18:4

The Lord Jesus also wanted the disciples to have a continuing idea of greatness. The disciple must continue to have a humble and childlike disposition. A child would not actually be focused on the issue of greatness. He is happy just being part of the team with the Lord Jesus. Let’s seek to have this sustained humility.

3. Humility To Serve In Humble Capacity

“Whoever receives one little child like this in My name receives Me.”
Matthew 18:5

As disciples of Jesus, they were also meant to serve in whatever small capacity they have been asked to serve. Little children were not highly regarded during the times of Jesus. Even in the matter of reaching out to children, this ministry must be done with the Lord Jesus in mind. We are to serve, seeking to bring honour to the Lord’s name. Let’s be humble enough to serve in any capacity, no matter how big or small it may be.
