“And I Will Give You Rest”

“Come To Me …”

Is it really that hard to understand who the Lord Jesus is? The answer is “No”. In the text of Matthew 11:25-27, the Lord had just given thanks to God the Father for revealing His truths to “babes” like His disciples. And the Lord was making a call to people who were heavy laden by life to come to Him and to know Him as stated in the text of Matthew 11:28.

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

The word “labor” in Greek means to work really hard till one is exhausted. It is to toil much in all that one is doing. The word “heavy laden” means to be overloaded with worries and cares. Perhaps, this is how some of you may be feeling now as you go through your exams. The Lord gives us an invitation to come to Him, to know Him and have faith in Him. And the Lord Himself will give us a spiritual rest. There will come rest for our soul (Matthew 11:29). Young people, have you found rest for your soul? Let’s be challenged to come to the Lord Jesus; to find faith and hope in Him.

“Take My Yoke On You … And You Will Find Rest For Your Souls”

“Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart and you will rest for your souls.”
Matthew 11:29

The word “yoke” has the idea of service. It means to do work for the Lord. When we have come to find faith in the Lord, we should also seek to serve Him. How can we go about bearing His yoke?

1. Learning From The Lord Jesus

When we take on the challenges of living for the Lord and serving Him, we are to learn from Him and His example. The word “learn” in Greek has the idea of being a disciple. When we seek to be a disciple of Jesus and diligently learn from Him and His word, we will find spiritual rest for our soul.

2. Learning To Be Humble In Heart

Disciples of the Lord Jesus can also find spiritual rest when we seek to follow Him in being humble. Our Saviour had spoken of being gentle and meek in heart. He saw Himself as One who was humble and lowly before the Lord God. Paul wrote of how Jesus took the form of a bondservant and humbled Himself and became obedient to His death (Philippians 2:7-8). He sought to be totally dependent on the Lord’s grace to fulfil His will (Hebrews 2:9). Peter also wrote of how the Lord God grants grace to the humble (1 Peter 5:5). When we humble ourselves before Him, He will renew our spirits and grant us grace to bear the yoke of service as Jesus did.

“For My Yoke Is Easy”

“For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
Matthew 11:30

When there is the renewing of our spirit and we have found spiritual rest, we would find strength to carry the burdens and challenges of life and ministry. When we have the Lord as the focus in life and ministry, He would grant us greater grace and strength to do His will. His yoke and burden is not as hard as we think it is. There would be the faith, joy and love to carry His yoke. Let’s keep seeking the Lord and His word till the challenges and responsibilities of life and ministry become pleasant, joyous and not burdensome.
