PACIFIC RIM

This photo was taken from 33000 feet above sea level. I was on my way to Korea and we were flying over the South China Sea.   There was not a single piece of land in sight for as far as the eyes can see.   According to Wikipedia, the South China Sea is a marginal sea that is part of the Pacific Ocean. It encompasses an area from the Singapore and Malacca Straits to the Strait of Taiwan.   It spans about 3,500,000 square kilometres.    This area though small compared to the rest of the Pacific Ocean actually has about one-third of the world’s shipping transiting through its waters.  As I was taking some photographs from the plane traversing through the air in the midst of the noonday sun, I was quite awed by the sheer size of the sea from where I saw it.  And yet, this is but a small part of the whole South China Sea.  The South China Sea is designated as only a marginal part of the greater Pacific ocean which is 165.25 million square kilometres in area, which is something that we can’t even begin to comprehend.    The Pacific Ocean is the largest oceanic division of the all the oceans of the world.  Combining all the oceans and seas of the world, it has been stated that the total volume of the world’s oceans is approximately 1.3 billion cubic kilometres with an average depth of 3,682 metres.   This is truly amazing!

MEASURING ALL OCEANS WITH HIS HAND

“Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, measured heaven with a span and calculated the dust of the earth in a measure?  Weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance?…”  Isaiah 40:12

What is even more amazing is the Person who created such great things of the earth.   Isaiah wrote in his book of how it was the Lord God who created all things on the earth.   He wrote this word to the people of Israel concerning the Lord’s restoration of the nation after captivity.   It would be a time for the people to rediscover the Lord God as their God.   They had to go back to basics with regards to knowing God.   They had to see God as One who is truly great and almighty.  He is the One who created the great oceans, the mountains, the sky and space.   It is truly awesome to think of how all the waters of the world would fit into the hollow of one of His hand.   1.3 billion cubic kilometres with an average depth of 3,682 metres would just fit into one of His great hands.   This is truly an awesome thought!  He also measured the whole universe with a ruler.  He calculated how many grains of dust and sand there would be in the world. He also weighed all the mountains and hills in a scale.   Truly the Lord is a most powerful creator and He is our sovereign King.

“It is He who sits above the circle of the earth and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers…”  Isaiah 40:22

As we consider how great God is, let’s remember that He is truly sovereign over all things.  He sits on His throne above the equator of the earth.   All of us are to Him like small grasshoppers. That is most humbling.  Young people, let’s remember our place before God.  We are just mere grasshoppers to Him.   Let’s recognise Him as our Almighty God and humble ourselves before Him. Let’s stand in awe in of Him and His creation and learn to exercise greater faith in Him.
