The greatness of Christ

As Christmas approaches, let us take time to appreciate how great the Lord Jesus is. Last Sunday, Pastor Charles taught us about the greatness of the Lord Jesus Christ. This greatness is found in His relationship with God. He is called the “Son of the Highest.” (Luke 1:32) There is a special and deep connection between the Son and the Father. Jesus’ greatness is also found in Him being made King and ascending the throne of His father David (Luke 1:32). Many kings failed to rule the way they should have, but the Lord Jesus reigns as King in righteousness, love and kindness. The greatness of Christ is also seen in Him ruling over an eternal kingdom. His kingdom will last forever. As we appreciate the greatness of Christ, let us rejoice in being part of the kingdom of God, having the Lord Jesus as our King.

Adoration of the greatness of Christ as King

The Apostle Paul gave adoration of the greatness of the Lord Jesus towards the end of his first letter to Timothy. In what way did Paul reveal the greatness of the Lord Jesus?

1. The titles of Christ reveal His greatness

a. He is the blessed and only Potentate (1 Tim 6:15)

The word “Potentate” in Greek is “dunastes” which means “ruler, sovereign”. The Lord Jesus is the sovereign ruler of all. He is truly blessed and there is no one like Him.

b. The King of kings (1 Tim 6:15)

There are many kings, but there is only one King of kings. This title reveals that Christ rules over all kings and kingdoms. Let us regard Him as the glorious King of kings.

c. The Lord of lords (1 Tim 6:15)

Jesus is the greatest Lord of all. All other lords are subject to Him. No one has the power and authority that the Lord Jesus has. Let us give heartfelt adoration to our Christ as Lord.

2. The Person of Christ reveals His greatness

a. His immortality (1 Tim 6:16)

Paul wrote that the Lord Jesus alone has immortality, but it does not exclude the Father and the Holy Spirit. It is Paul’s way of adoring Christ as Divine who is unlike any other living person. Let us adore our great Christ for His immortality.

b. He dwells in great light (1 Tim 6:16)

“Dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see,”

Where does the Lord Jesus dwell? He is residing in heaven, seated at the right hand of God.

He dwells in the heavenly light that is so awesome that it is unapproachable. No human being has or can see that great light. Let us extol Christ as One who dwells in that glorious realm of light.

Awe and adoration

Personally, I stand in awe of Christ, the one and only Potentate. Let us give to our great King of kings and Lord of lords humble adoration and honour. He alone has the awesome power to reign over His everlasting kingdom. Let us not be caught up or distracted by the peripheral things of Christmas. Let us place our full focus on Christ, His greatness and give Him the adoration that He rightly deserves this Christmas.
