INTRODUCTION

1. Returning to the story of Joseph

a) He was sold by his brothers to some Ishmaelite traders
b) He ended up as a slave in Egypt

2. The brothers in the land of Canaan

a) They were not faring so well
b) His father, Jacob, grieved deeply thinking that Joseph had died

POTIPHAR, AN OFFICER OF PHARAOH

1. He was an Egyptian

2. He was a captain in the Pharaoh’s army

3. He had bought Joseph from the Ishmaelite traders

THE PRESENCE OF THE LORD

1. The LORD was with Joseph Genesis 39:2a

2. Consequently:

a) He was a successful man Genesis 39:2b
b) He served Potiphar as a slave

3. The significance of this great truth

a) The Lord’s Presence
b) The blessings
i) Joseph
ii) Potiphar

RECOGNITION BY POTIPHAR

1. An important observation

And his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD made all he did to prosper in his hand.

Genesis 39:3

a) Blessings came as a result of the LORD’s presence
b) All that he had prospered!

2. Response of Potiphar

4 So Joseph found favour in his sight, and served him. Then he made him overseer of his house, and all that he had he put under his authority. 5 So it was, from the time that he had made him overseer of his house and all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the LORD was on all that he had in the house and in the field. 6 Thus he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand, and he did not know what he had except for the bread which he ate.

Genesis 39:4-6

a) Joseph found favour in Potiphar’s sight

3. The Blessings of the LORD

a) The LORD blessed Potiphar for Joseph’s sake
b) The blessings:
i) The house of Potiphar
ii) The fields of Potiphar

THE PROMISE OF THE PRESENCE OF THE LORD

1. Abraham

a) God’s Call Genesis 12

2. Isaac

a) Promise of God’s Presence and Blessing
“I will be with you and bless you”
Genesis 26:3
b) Prosperity
“The man began to prosper, and continued prospering,
Until he became very prosperous”

3. Jacob

a) Promise of God’s Presence
“Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.”

b) God kept His word to Jacob fully

4. Joseph

a) God’s Presence was not spoken
b) But there was no denying the significance of God’s presence with him
c) Even Potiphar the Egyptian captain could appreciate God’s presence with Joseph

3. To become the person God wants us to be
