GOD’S WORD TO SAMUEL

1. He continued to mourn over Saul

2. God had rejected him

3. God had chosen another king

4. He was to go to Jesse the Bethlehemite 1 Samuel 16:1

SAMUEL’S FEAR OF BEING KILLED BY SAUL

1. This was expressed

2. Saul had caused many to fear him

OBEDIENCE TO THE LORD

1. Samuel had taught this 1 Samuel 15:22-23

2. He must practise what he taught

IN BETHLEHEM

1. Many feared the appearance of Samuel

2. This was the fear that Samuel had fought to overcome too 1 Samuel 16:4-5

IN THE HOME OF JESSE

1. Jesse presented 7 sons to Samuel

2. Samuel was suitably impressed with Eliab, the first born

a) He looked at his appearance
b) He looked at his physical stature 1 Samuel 16:7

3. This was a similar approach with reference to Saul He had been physically impressive too!

AN IMPORTANT INSIGHT

1. The LORD does not see as man sees

2. Man looks at the outward appearance

3. But the LORD looks at the heart 1 Samuel 16:7

PRINCIPLE NOT WELL-UNDERSTOOD

1. Saul has imposing physical features

a) He failed as a king
b) His heart was not good

2. Saul’s heart

a) Deceitful
b) Lying
c) Blaming others
d) Finding fault
e) Shallow
f) Unrepentant
g) Rash
h) Impulsive
i) Not spiritually inclined
j) He had not learned the lessons of life well

WHAT GOD WAS LOOKING FOR

1. A man after His own heart 1 Samuel 13:14

2. A neighbour better than you 1 Samuel 15:28

INTRODUCTION OF DAVID

1. The youngest 1 Samuel 16:11

2. Keeping the sheep 1 Samuel 16:11

3. Physical

a) Ruddy
b) Bright eyes
c) Good looking 1 Samuel 16:12

THE ANOINTING OF DAVID

1. On the instruction of the LORD

2. Samuel anointed David

3. The Spirit of the LORD came upon him from that day forward 1 Samuel 16:13

IN DIRECT CONTRAST

1. The Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul 1 Samuel 16:14a

2. A distressing spirit troubled him 1 Samuel 16:14b

FURTHER REFERENCES TO DAVID

1. A skilful player of the harp

2. A mighty man of valour

3. A man of war

4. Prudent in speech

5. A handsome person

6. And the LORD is with him 1 Samuel 16:8

David was brought to minister to King Saul 1 Samuel 16:23
