ANOTHER CHANCE GIVEN TO KING SAUL

1. Conversation with King Saul

a) Samuel was sent to anoint Saul as King
b) He must heed the voice of the words of the LORD 1 Samuel 15:1

2. Commandment given to Saul

a) Amalek to be utterly destroyed
b) Command was made clear 1 Samuel 15:2-3

3. Saul’s battle against the Amalekites

a) Saul defeated the Amalekites
b) BUT
i) He spared King Agag
ii) Kept the best of the sheep, oxen…
iii) All that was good 1 Samuel 15:4-9

GOD’S REVEALED WORD TO SAMUEL

1. Regret (sorrow) expressed 1 Samuel 15:10

a) Saul had turned back
b) He had not followed the Lord
c) He had not fully performed what God had commanded 1 Samuel 15:11

2. Samuel’s sorrow

a) He grieved
b) He cried out to God the whole night 1 Samuel 15:11

SAMUEL’S MEETING WITH KING SAUL

1. Saul

a) He greeted Samuel
b) He declared he had obeyed God’s commandment 1 Samuel 15:13
c) This was a bald-faced lie

2. Samuel’s retort

a) The sheep bleated
b) The oxen lowed 1 Samuel 15:14

3. Saul’s excuse

a) He blamed the people 1 Samuel 15:15
b) It was not his fault

4. Samuel’s rebuke

a) He would reveal what God had said to him
b) He recounted how God had chosen him 1 Samuel 15:17-19
i) He was little in his own eyes initially
ii) He was anointed king
iii) He was sent on a mission
iv) But there was disobedience

5. Saul’s insistence

a) He had obeyed the voice of God
b) He had destroyed Amalek
c) The animals had been kept for offering purposes 1 Samuel 15:20-21

6. Samuel’s solemn pronouncement

a) Obedience is key
b) Obedience is better than sacrifice
c) Rebellion compared to the sin of witchcraft
d) Stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry
e) Saul had rejected God’s word
f) God had rejected him as the king of Israel 1 Samuel 15:22-23

7. Saul’s plea

8. Samuel Reiterates God’s will
