CONSCIOUSNESS OF GOD IN WORSHIP

1. Consciousness of God

a)    How conscious of God are we?

b)    What kind of consciousness of God do we have?

2. Desired Consciousness of God

a)    Who is God?

i)    The Mighty One        Psalm 50:1

ii)    God the LORD        Psalm 50:1

iii)    God as Judge            Psalm 50:6

iv)    As a personal God        Psalm 50:7

b)    God comes to His people

i)    He comes from Zion        Psalm 50:2

ii)    He comes in shining glory    Psalm 50:2

iii)    He comes in awesome power    Psalm 50:3

c)    God speaks to His people

i)    He calls His people        Psalm 50:1, 4

SUBJECT: FORMAL WORSHIP

1. Prescribed worship (from the time of Moses)

a)    Led by the High Priest and other priests

b)    Assisted by the Levites    (Cf. Exodus, Leviticus)

2. Special feature

a)    Burnt offerings        Psalm 50:8

b)    Representatively mentioned

3. Worship offered to God

a)    Burnt offerings presented continually    Psalm 50:8

b)    Mistaken notions

i)    God was pleased with formal worship

ii)    God was being “fed” through animal sacrifices

4. Underlying problems

a)    A wrong idea of worship had persisted

b)    This had not been effectively addressed

c)    This had not been corrected

5. Addressing wrong ideas/ concepts

a)    Wrong worship must be corrected

b)    Wrong ideas must be put away

6. What is God looking for in worship?

a)    Offer to God thanksgiving            Psalm 50:14

b)    Pay your vows to the Most High        Psalm 50:14

c)    Call upon Me in the day of trouble        Psalm 50:15

d)    I will deliver you and you shall glorify Me    Psalm 50:15

THE WORSHIP THAT GOD DELIGHTS IN

1. Offer to God thanksgiving

a)    Thanksgiving

c)    Gratitude

i)    Do we have a sense of gratitude when we offer worship?

ii)    Is our heart and soul in our worship?

2. Pay your vows to the Most High

a)    Have we made promises to God?

b)    Have we kept our promises to Him?

c)    Have we fulfilled our vows?

3. Call upon Me in the day of trouble?

a)    How do we seek God when we are in trouble?

b)    How do we worship Him in those troubled times?

c)    Note how the heart no longer worships with the same fervour when we are not in trouble!

4. I will deliver you and you shall glorify Me

a)    Do we believe in God’s deliverance?

b)    Do we seek to glorify God after He has delivered us?

ADDRESSING THE WICKED

1. Who are the Wicked?

a)    The obviously wicked        Psalm 14

b)    The not-so obvious wicked    Psalm 50:16

2. These are worshippers

a)    My saints        Psalm 50:5

b)    My people        Psalm 50:7

3.  Questioning the activities of these people

a)    What right do you have to declare My statutes        Psalm 50:16

b)    Or take My covenant in your mouth            Psalm 50:16

c)    The attitude of these worshippers

i)    But you hate instruction (correction)        Psalm 50:17

ii)    And cast My words behind you            Psalm 50:17

iii)    Consenting to evil                Psalm 50:18

iv)    Mouth given to evil/ deceit            Psalm 50:19

v)    Speaking against the brethren            Psalm 50:20

vi)    You who forget God                Psalm 50:22

4. Understanding the Silence of God

a)    I have kept silent        Psalm 50:21

i)    There was no need for God to speak

ii)    The wrong should have been obvious

b)    I will rebuke you        Psalm 50:21

i)    God now speaks

ii)    But it is in rebuke

c)    Set them in order        Psalm 50:21

i)    Candidly

ii)    Clearly

5. A solemn word of admonition

a)    Lest I tear you to pieces    Psalm 50:22

b)    None to deliver        Psalm 50:22

6. A word of Encouragement and hope

a)    Whoever offers praise glorifies Me                Psalm 50:23

b)    He who orders his life aright will be shown the salvation of God    Psalm 50:23
