Text: Psalm 79

Subject: Intercession
(Similar to Psalm 74)

1. Lament of sacrilege committed against the Temple

a)    The nations have come into Your inheritance        Psalm 79:1

b)    They had defiled the Temple                Psalm 79:1

c)    They have laid Jerusalem in heaps            Psalm 79:1

d)    The dead bodies of Your servants left for scavengers    Psalm 79:2

e)    Their blood shed as water all around Jerusalem        Psalm 79:3

f)    There was no one to bury them            Psalm 79:3

g)    We have become a reproach to neighbours        Psalm 79:4

h)    A scorn and derision to all around            Psalm 79:4

2. A sad cry

a)    How long, Lord?                    Psalm 79:5

b)    Will You be angry forever?                Psalm 79:5

c)    Will Your jealousy burn like fire?            Psalm 79:5

3. A cry against the wicked nations

a)    Pour out Your wrath on the nations that do not know You        Psalm 79:6

b)    On the kingdoms that do not call on Your name            Psalm 79:6

c)    They have devoured Jacob                    Psalm 79:7

d)    And laid waste on his dwelling place                Psalm 79:7

4. Plea for mercy

a)    Oh, do not remember former iniquities against us        Psalm 79:8

b)    Let Your tender mercies come speedily to meet us        Psalm 79:8

c)    We have been brought very low                Psalm 79:8

d)    Help us, O God of our salvation                Psalm 79:9

e)    For the glory of Your name                    Psalm 79:9

f)    And deliver us                        Psalm 79:9

g)    And provide atonement for us                    Psalm 79:9

h)    For Your name’s sake                        Psalm 79:9

i)    Why should the nations say, “Where is Your God?”    `    Psalm 79:10

j)    Let the groaning of the prisoner come before You        Psalm 79:11

k)    According to the greatness of Your power            Psalm 79:11

l)    Preserve those who are appointed to die            Psalm 79:11

m)    We, Your people and the sheep of Your pasture            Psalm 79:12

5. Imprecatory element

a)    Return to our neighbours sevenfold into their bosom        Psalm 79:12

b)    Their reproach with which they have reproached You, O LORD    Psalm 79:12

6. Appropriate response (“Vows”)

a)    We will give thanks forever                    Psalm 79:12

b)    We will show forth Your praise to all generations            Psalm 79:12
