2. The Lord Jesus
a) He was The Lamb of God that would be slain (John 1:35)
b) What were the things in His heart and mind?
THE LOVE OF THE LORD JESUS
1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.
2 And supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Him,
3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God,
John 13:1-3
1. Full knowledge of His imminent death
2. The Mind of the Lord Jesus at His impending death
a) Departing from this world
b) Returning to God the Father
c) He had Faith and Hope that was Heaven-bound!
3. The Heart of the Lord Jesus
a) He had loved “His own”
b) He would love them “to the end”
THE CELEBRATING OF PASSOVER
1. The old Commandment was kept
The Passover was celebrated with His Disciples
2. The work of the Devil
a) He had attacked the Lord’s work in many ways
i) The Three Temptations
ii) Demon possession
iii) But he had failed
b) Another attack planned
i) He attacked Judas Iscariot
ii) The heart was the target
iii) He would betray the Lord Jesus
3. The Lord’s knowledge
a) He knew and trusted the Father
b) The Father had given Him all things
c) There was one more thing that needed to be done urgently
d) It must be performed!
e) It was an astonishing lesson for the Disciples to learn
THE WASHING OF FEET
4 Rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself.
5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.
6 Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, “Lord, are You washing my feet?”
7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.”
8 Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”
9 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”
10 Jesus said to him, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.”
11 For He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, “You are not all clean.”
John 13:4-11
1. Washing of feet
a) This was the work of a lowly slave
b) The Lord Jesus did this humble work
2. The Reluctance of Peter
a) He queried the Lord Jesus
b) He held back and refused to comply
3. The firm words of the Lord Jesus
a) He needs to be washed
b) Or he will not be a part of the Lord’s band
4. Peter’s obedience
a) He did not fully understand
b) But he submitted himself to the Lord
THE LESSONS FOR US TODAY
1. Fathoming the Love of the Lord
a) Love with discernment
b) Love with the ability to serve humbly
2. Appreciating what the Lord knew about His Disciples
a) They needed to learn grue humility
b) They needed to understand the need to be cleansed
c) They needed to grow in their knowledge
3. Where danger lurks
a) Where there is no humility
b) When we are not cleansed
c) When there is a lack of love
d) The heart can be very vulnerable to spiritual attacks
